Detect Card Skimmers

The ESP32 is capable of acting as a BLE device or host. As such, it can passively scan for surrounding BLE devices.

Through my research, I have found that credit card skimmers with Bluetooth capabilities often use hobbyist level Bluetooth development boards:

  • HC-03
  • HC-05
  • HC-06

There is a cool Sparkfun article here about detecting and analyzing Bluetooth enabled credit card skimmers. Essentially you just need to scan for Bluetooth devices. If there is a password protected device with any of the names from the list above, there is a chance it is a credit card skimmer. Since the people who use these skimmers are skids at best, the firmware found on them is likely very cookie cutter and will have the same default password. If you can connect to the Bluetooth device and send a "P", you will know if you have a skimmer once you receive an "M".
