🧵 Installing Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA)
-
Get the AAA installer. You can get it from 2 places:
a. Download the latest version of AAA from http://www.articulateinstruments.com/downloads/
b. Insert the USB drive we sent you with your hardware and open it in Windows.
Left: AAA Licence Key, Right: Installation USB drive
-
Run the AAA installer by right-clicking it, choosing "Run as Administrator", and follow the instructions it shows you.
You need Windows administrator privileges; you may need to ask for help from your IT services if it’s not your own computer.
Read the license agreement. If you agree to it, click "I accept the agreement", and then click "Next".
Please choose a location that is inside your User folder, for example in your "Documents" folder.
(This is because AAA always needs permission to write and edit files inside its own folder at runtime.)
You can use the "Browse" button to choose a location on your computer.
Once you have chosen a location, click "OK" to close the browse pop-up window, then please click "Next".
If you already have AAA installed then you can either choose to install this version of AAA to a new folder, or overwrite a previous installation of AAA by selecting its folder again as the folder you wish to install to.
If this is your first time installing AAA then you MUST choose "Full install of AAA", or tick every box by clicking on each one so it has a tick shown in it.
The exception to this is if you already have Anaconda installed on this computer. AAA can use an existing installation of Anaconda. (However, if you later encounter problems with Anaconda or DeepLabCut, try redoing this entire installation process, but install Miniconda in addition to Anaconda.)
After you have done this, please click "Next".
If you have already installed AAA at least once before on this computer, you can choose whatever features you want by using the drop-down list or ticking/unticking the boxes.
This will overwrite any shortcut called "AAA" that is already on your desktop!
After you have chosen, please click "Next".
Your choices are now shown. Please check them to ensure they are correct. If they are correct, click "Install".
If you wish to modify any of your choices, you can either click the "Back" button or close the installer and begin again from the start.
If you see the following error message, it means that you chose to install AAA in a location which you don't have permission to modify.
If this happens then please choose a different location, or check that your antivirus isn't preventing it and try again.
If the issue persists, please contact your IT services. If it's your own computer, check which usergroups have ownership of the folder. You might need to call the cmd/powershell commands "takeown" and/or "icacls" on the folder that you wish to write to.
After the installation is finished, new pop-up windows might appear which guide you through the next stages of setup.
You might see a message saying that Dinkey Dongle drivers have been installed. Click "OK".
If you purchased a lip video camera, please ensure its data connector (BNC) is correctly plugged into the ImagingSource box, the ImagingSource box is correctly plugged into your computer by USB, and ensure that your camera's power cable is plugged into the mains electrical power and switched on. Then ensure all checkboxes are ticked and click "Next".
If you do not have a lip video camera, click "Cancel".
After installation is complete, click "Finish".
Please ensure "Uninstall existing drivers" is ticked. Then, click "Next".
Please ensure all checkboxes are ticked. Then, click "Next".
It will then show you the settings it will use. Click "Next".
After installation is finished, ensure that "Scan for hardware changes" is ticked and then click "Finish".
Click "Next".
It will ask you if you want to overwrite all presets and settings.
Click the button which says "I agree to overwrite all presets and settings". Then, click "Next".
Choose your region by clicking on the appropriate button (This does not affect the functioning of the software). Then, click "Next".
You are now presented with a choice of where to install the Echo Wave II software. You can either change it to a folder of your choice by clicking the "Change" button, or leave it at the suggested default location. Once you are satisfied that it is set to a location you want, click "Next".
Echo Wave II has multiple shortcuts that it wants to put in your Windows Start Menu. Here you can choose what folder in your start menu the shortcuts will be created in. You can leave it at its suggested default location and click "Next".
If you are happy to proceed with installation, click "Next".
Installation may take some time. Once installation has finished, click "Finish".
Please click "Next" and then read the license agreement. If you agree to it then click "I Agree".
You will be given a choice of which features to install.
Please ensure all components are ticked by clicking on any that are not ticked. Then, click "Next".
You can now choose what location on your computer you would like these video codecs to be installed to. You can choose a location by clicking the "Browse" button, or you can leave it at the suggested default location. Once you have chosen a location, click "Install".
Once it has finished installing, it will wait at the screen with the progress bar. To proceed, you must click the "Next" button.
Click "Finish".
Click "Next". Then, read the license agreement. If you agree to it, click "I Agree".
If only one person will be using this computer for AAA, choose "Just Me", even if you have administrator privileges. (If IT services are doing this installation, they should please ensure that Miniconda is installed into the user folder for the person who will be using it.)
If IT services are installing this on a machine which will serve multiple users of AAA on different user accounts, choose "All Users" but be aware that every end user will need write and execute permissions to the Miniconda folder.
Once you have chosen, click "Next".
You can choose what location on your computer you would like to install Miniconda to. You can use the "Browse..." button to choose a location. However, it is strongly recommended that you leave it on the suggested default location.
When you are ready to proceed, click "Next".
Please leave both options unticked so that they are not selected. Then, click "Install".
Once it has finished installing, it will wait at the screen with the progress bar. To proceed, you must click the "Next" button.
Untick both options so they are not selected, and then click "Finish".
Please wait, as this might take up to 1 minute. If it takes more than 1 minute, please click here.
Look in your Windows Taskbar at the bottom of your screen for a command prompt window, then click on it to view it.
It might look something like the image below.
The text written in it will show what the installer has been doing. It is probably installing DeepLabCut, which is large software that can take several minutes to download. Once it is finished it will proceed automatically to the next stage of installation.
If it has stopped and shows errors, please screenshot them or take a photograph of them and send them to us by email. We will help you!
When the final part of installation is complete, you will see an option to launch AAA.
Untick it so it is not selected, then click "Finish".

OR
b. Open the Windows Start Menu and search for "AAA", then click on it, or look in the “ArticAsst” folder in the Start Menu.

(Optional) Insert your Dongle License USB Key into the computer (after you have installed AAA, not before). You must do this to allow you to record and edit your own data. If you do not have a License Key, you can only play with the demo data provided in AAA.
You can buy a License Key by emailing us at [email protected].
Your USB Licence Key is valuable! Don’t lose it! Keep it safe when you’re not using it!
If Windows asks you for drivers for a new device, this is likely because you put in the USB Licence Key before the installation was done. Just remove the USB Licence Key, then install AAA, then restart your computer.
Once AAA is installed, the next step is to set up your ultrasound settings.
