@yoe and I do a design review of each design iteration. This is done remotely via a video call plus screen sharing.
The design review call for design iteration 2 happened on May 9th. Below are the notes from our discussion and the decisions we made.
- We discussed the design changes from version 1 and agreed they are looking good as they are.
- We discussed the design of the audio channels section. I explained that the best solution I could think of would provide a sound preview for each channel, so that people could choose the channel with the best quality audio. @yoe also observed that had the advantage of avoiding multiple reviews. He explained it should be possible to extract an audio sample from each channel and make it available in the review page. The sample would come from the middle of the video, to maximise the chances of including the speaker talking. We agreed to sample one minute from each channel. Belén will design the audio channels section as part of iteration 3.
- We also spoke about showing the stages a video goes through. This is particularly useful when the video is not ready for review: people can see why and get an idea of how long it might take for the video to be available. The video stages are at https://github.com/yoe/sreview#states The video is available for review when in state 'preview'. If users submit a review without issues, the video moves into 'transcoding'. If users submit a review with issues, the video moves back to 'cutting'. Belén will do some quick hand sketches of how the video stage information could look like for iteration 3.
- We agreed not to worry too much about the AV sync option for now: maybe we'll add it as is, hide the controls by default, and show them only if the user specifies there is a syncing problem. We can tackle it properly once the urgent work for iteration 3 (audio and video stages) is done.
- Belén apologised for the slow progress, and will do her best to send a new version within a couple of weeks. We'll see is she manages :)
