01) Why play Half Life: Alyx on the Oculus Go?

Half-Life: Alyx is a "killer app" for virtual reality, and a "must play" for fans of the Half-Life series.

The game requires a Steam-VR compatible VR headset. You can use an "affordable" one (around US$ 400) like the Oculus Rift S or Oculus Quest (both hard to find in stock), or Windows Mixed Reality, up to one of the currently most advanced and expensive VR headsets: the Vive Index.

Oculus Go headset and controllerWhile the Oculus Go is not officially supported, it can be used to play many SteamVR games with the right hardware, software and configuration, including Half-Life-Alyx. Still, I can't stress this enough: the Oculus Go CAN'T provide an experience as good as the officially supported headsets! I do NOT recommend anyone to buy the Oculus Go just to play this game (save your money for a better headset)! But if you already own an Oculus Go, have a PC that can play the game, can't buy a better headset at the moment and don't mind learning a somewhat awkward controller system, this project is for you.

I've completed the game with all achievements, playing on my Oculus Go connected to my PC via Wi-Fi, in Story mode (the easiest level of difficulty). Of course, the experience is certainly not as fun or intuitive as with a 6 DoF headset (Oculus Go is only 3 DoF, has a single controller and doesn't have enough buttons), but the game is fully playable and I enjoyed it immensely! I'd rather buy an Oculus Quest to play the game with, but since I can't buy it now for a reasonable price where I live, the Oculus Go allows me to have my Half-Life fix right now!
