Bitcloud is an open source distributed cloud storage system and escrow agent based on Tahoe-LAFS that allows publishers to pay storage nodes for storing encrypted data and sharing that data with others. The decentralized nature of Bitcloud allows anyone to publish large amounts of data in a way that is free from censorship, high costs, and proprietary software.
Bitcloud can be the base for decentralized applications that require data storage and bandwidth. These applications are distributed alternatives to current centralized web applications, such as YouTube, Dropbox, Soundcloud, Facebook, Flickr, and others. The core principles behind decentralized applications built on top of Bitcloud are decentralization, complete autonomy, free and open source code, and the choice of anonymity. The first decentralized application for Bitcloud will be WeTube, a platform for viewing and publishing videos, podcasts, ebooks, music, and other forms of media.
In addition to private storage grids for decentralized applications, there is also a public grid in Bitcloud that can be used by anyone. This grid is completely unmoderated, and there is no cost for uploading data. The data is stored by nodes who want to donate their storage space and bandwidth to the public grid.
