Comment from Sharon Sacco:

"Is this intended to give more information than just success or not? If so, it should have been a bool with VSIP_TRUE and VSIP_FALSE. If there is more information here, it is not portable unless specified."

(Note that any work on this requires an upstream (OMG) issue.)
