Aha, that explains it. The code in question does support the legacy storage, but it adds the meta_query argument for HPOS. The legacy query does indeed not support meta_query; I guess they added a "doing it wrong" instead of adding support for it.

The message is harmless; I'll silence it for next version of the plugin. Thanks for reporting!
