This is a nightmare of browser specific hacks and is an evolving situation which may or may not ever fully work, depending on how browser developers continue interpreting the HTML5 File API spec.

According to some of the answers, it may require an unsandboxed, secure site. Other solutions it works but not on chrome. Blah blah.

Currently, the viewer says it does this, but that is false - until that note is removed, this missing ability should be classified as a bug.

The native file system api is early and experimental but offers significant hope that the limitations will vaporise in time.
