[Feature] Better documentation of internals

What feature or capability would you like?

Better documentation around the internal flow of the software. Essentially something written from the perspective that I'm a new member of your software development team, and I need to ramp-up and become productive quickly. Assume I'm smart and understand Golang and JSON Schema, but don't know anything about this specific piece of software.

I've seen CONTRIBUTING.md and DEVELOPERS.md, but neither of them appear to be this (they're mostly process-oriented).
