It just occurred to me that this repo doesn't have much documentation about how the mappings work.

Would be good to update the readme/wiki to (at least) give some information about what the repo does rather than just how to execute the scripts.

I ran into the same question, why is it required in the first place and when is it actually used during the docker setup process etc. I failed to understand what's the schema's role is. Maybe more explanation would help.
