The Mac OS X driver can be found at /System/Library/Extensions/AppleCameraInterface.kext. Metadata:

Looking at the strings in the kext bundle, there are references to DDR memory, loading of firmware, and IPC queue, I2C and ACPI and ASPM. There may be different raw, metadata and output buffers. It may be able to do face-detection.
