But in #274 You said that "will make a new page recommending things like Newpipe/Freetube later using the new system.". Piped uses NewPiped Extractor to extract videos.

Piped is a frontend designed to protect you from Google tracking, it uses NewPipeExtractor behind the scenes, doesn't make any connections to Google's server, can be used without an account.

The biggest difference between using Piped and YouTube is that there's no JS tracking at all, youtube logs a lot of client events and activities.

The official instance keeps no access logs of any sort, I'd be surprised if youtube does the same.

Also, nothing stops you from hosting your own instance if you don't trust me/my instance.

Well, I recommended NewPipe and FreeTube just because you can have your subscription list, play list and what not stored locally. You don't have to trust anyone in this regard.

With things like Piped and Invidious, a user has to trust the operator of those instances, and there is no way to actually verify that they aren't profiled. It's a shifting trust around situation.

As for self hosting, yes, it is nice. However, if you are the only person using an instance, then you stand out anyways - Google can just figure out all requests from that one instance is you. You need other people using the same instance to blend in, at which point they have to trust you.

With FreeTube/Newpipe, you can just use them with a VPN, at which point Google can't profile you, and you don't have anyone to trust with your subscription list/play list either.

We decided to not add Piped because it doesn't really serve any purpose/threat model.

• If you are worried about Google having your IP, use a VPN.
• If you want to watch YouTube without Javascript, use Invidious.
• If you want to have your private subscription lists/playlists, use FreeTube.

Piped really does not add any privacy benefit at all besides shifting trust from YouTube to itself.

You named three alternatives which people could use, why is there no room for a 4th one?

1. I don't want to pay for a VPN
2. Maybe I want to watch YouTube with JS
3. I don't want to install software on my computer / I don't own a computer

Your reasons are subjective and questionable at best.

Only difference between Piped and Invidious is that Piped is that it is using Java Script and the Number of Public Instances is just two not many like Invidious. Piped is Open-Source like Invidious and the Project founder even stated the reason why maded Piped and how it is superior to Invidious. To know about it got the Documentation on their Github Repo.

The difference is, with a VPN you're shifting trust from your ISP to the VPN provider - one that is reputable and has many customers exiting the same server. As far as the instance is concerned or Google "Someone from X VPN requested Y video".

Using proxy frontends without a VPN is your subscriber IP address directly hitting a server which could be run by anyone, in addition to googlevideo.com seeing it.

That's not the reason. Freetube runs on your device and lets you keep subscriber info locally. You can pipe that through Tor or a VPN.

Unlike Invidious, you can't use it without JavaScript. There are also .onion Invidious instances.

Piped also offers .onion addresses. The official Instance does offer a Onion Service piped2bbch4xslbl2ckr6k62q56kon56ffowxaqzy42ai22a4sash3ad.onion. In that you can change the instance you cana use via Preferences.

You forgot one thing,Piped can be used on Android but not Invidious/Freetube,Id say its a good alternative for Android users.
