Canister XXX has no update method 'square'

Here is the function I use :

public func square (n : Nat) : async Nat {
    return(n * n);
  };

And it gives me this error :
The Replica returned an error: code 3, message: "Canister rrkah-fqaaa-aaaaa-aaaaq-cai has no update method 'square'"

Notice the error message. Canister rrkah-fqaaa-aaaaa-aaaaq-cai has no update method 'square'

• Can you check that the function you've linked above is part of the canister with ID rrkah-fqaaa-aaaaa-aaaaq-cai?
• Can you check that the canister is deployed?

And now I get the same message when I try to do challenge 3 ...

  };

But function square and add are working ...

I made it work by doing the "dfx deploy" every time I setup a new function, is it normal ?

I think you have a misunderstanding :

1. The code that you are writing in main.mo is not directly affecting your canister that is on your local replica
2. Everytime you change the code, you need to save the file and then run dfx deploy YOUR_CANISTER_NAME so the code can be compiled and the module inside the canister can be replaced with a new one corresponding to the new code :)

You can also just run dfx deploy and it will automically redeployed all the canisters specified in dfx.json.

Yeah thanks that was what I did not get. when asked if I depolyed cannister I said yes because I did it once, not realising I should do it everytime. Thank you

I'm having a similar issue, I've saved the changes and tried to deploy again but it gave me this
