Question: Clip-Layer vs Filter-Expression

Hello,

for me the clip layer looks very special. It can only be used for 3D-Models and not for all the other layers. Like i understood the same result can be done by using filter-expressions of distance which works on all geometric layers. So, why not using this expression also for the models? Or does the clip works different and will really cut the features at the edge?
