Expected behavior

The amenity photo_booth has over a thousand usages. It is currently not rendered on the map at all. iD already renders it as a separate POI.

There should be two photo booths here (e.g. this one), but they aren't shown.

Thank you for opening this issue, @danielsjf

Usage history: rising steadily since mid-2014 but still not very common:
amenity-photo_booth-history

Map of current distribution, quite concentrated in Japan, Taiwan, and Northwestern Europe (Britain, France, Germany and neighboring areas)
amenity-photo_booth-map

Documented similar to current wiki page since May 2014: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:amenity%3Dphoto_booth&action=history

I believe this tag is well-defined and usage is increasing, so at some point in the next few years it might be worth rendering at high zoom levels.

However, it is currently only used in a few countries in two small regions (insular east Asia and northwestern Europe).

I suggest to wait until this tag is used in more places around the world and by larger numbers of mappers before considering rendering.

@jeisenbe thanks for looking into this. In general, what kind of adoption is required here? Both in terms of number and regional spread. Not sure if there are guidelines for this.

At the moment there is not even a POI reference. I was wondering if it couldn't be taken together with something else, to indicate at least something on the map.

See #660 for one of discussions that ended without a clear conclusion.

There was also another discussion in #1630 about adding more features (see in particular #1630 (comment) and the following comments)

Most recently we have been discussing POI icons in #3635 - "Too many icons". Since rendering amenity=photo_booth would probably require using an icon, this would be relevant.

@matkoniecz, @jeisenbe, I went through those discussions (read them diagonally since they are quite long). I do understand the discussions on the clutteredness of too many icons. However, at the moment it isn't clear that there is something at all. Would it not be possible to simply render them as dots on the lowest zoom level without any icon at all? This would be similar to how POIs are rendered on higher zoom levels.

I couldn't find such a suggestion in any one of the issues. Of course respecting other overlaying rules in case that there is something else more important.

This only works for named features, like schools or offices.

Since amenity=photo_booth features are not named, the meaning of the dot would not be clear to map users.
