Resource Metrics in Kubernetes

Since heapster is now deprecated and has reached end of life, we will use metrics-server in order to check resource metrics in kubernetes.

Install metrics server

git clone https://github.com/kubernetes-incubator/metrics-server
cd metrics-server/deploy
kubectl create -f 1.8+/

Ensure that metrics server is running

kubectl get pods -n kube-system | grep metrics
metrics-server-v0.3.1-8d4c5db46-fgb6v                          2/2     Running   0          5m39s

Gather Pod Resource metrics

kubectl top pods --all-namespaces

To see the CPU and memory usage for the individual containers of a pod -

kubectl top pod metrics-server-v0.3.1-8d4c5db46-fgb6v -n kube-system --containers

Gather Node resource metrics

We can also see the CPU and memory usage for individual nodes by specifying a node name

kubectl top node gke-standard-cluster-1-default-pool-410b975c-7jpk
