The very brief information on markdown syntax (that is, the little yellow box in the upper right-hand side of the wiki) does not include how to escape characters to prevent them from being misinterpreted as wiki markdown. If there is no way to escape characters, this functionality needs to be added and and then documented. If there already is a way to escape characters, then it's just the documentation that needs to be added.

Example: underscore. If there are two of them on a line, they disappear and
the text between them is italicized. See the Sandbox page on the wiki (
http://en.wiki.tatoeba.org/articles/show/sandbox# ) for more examples.

ok, i see, you need to put a backslash before to escape them

a_b a_b for example (note that i needed to put 3 blash in order to show it)

 a\\\_b a\\\_b

I'm going to add that in the explanation box on the right.

It's especially puzzling because there's nothing in the explanation box that says that underscores can be used as an alternative to asterisks for marking bold or italicized sections.

hmmm after double checking, it seems double undescore only affect the "preview" but not the actual page
