(EN) About Freebox
The Freebox is probably the most famous french ISP multimedia box. Made by Iliad/Free.
Back in 2002, Free created the first triple play box in the world, an xDsl ISP box that include internet+phone+TV, at a very low price. Eventually Free will rule in France the price war but also the xdsl technology and speeds, developping his own server, making a long war with the government's Orange ISP, the only one able to install phone.
In 2006, Iliad launch his 5th version called Freebox HD. One of the first H264 capable box when there was still no HD on national TV or anywhere else. That box will start multiples multimedia services like videos, webcam streaming (fastly closed), games (mostly simply doom), free newsgroups full access... Eventually Freeox HD will be sold as low cost boxes later using names like AliceBOx or Crystal.
But also the multiposte service. Multiposte allows users to watch TV on other screens, using vlc+m3u but only on local network. That service is one of the few able to grab local DVB-T to re-stream it on local network next to regular IPTV. pvr.freebox is a freebox automated TV client for kodi, but does not work with Freebox HD V5.
In 2010, Free launch his 6th version called Freebox Revolution, still available in 2020. A major box that will bring Stark design, bluray reader, game and apps service, full multimedia player, impressive NAS server, Freebox OS access to admin it on the web, VPN in & out to eventually export the full TV experience outside the home !. Those boxes are still developped using their own linux based system.
In 2015, Free launch the Freebox Mini4K. Basically it's a mini revolution server, the server part is cheaper, smaller but as powerful, but the player box has been replaced with the world first ISP's AndroidTV box !
In 2019, Free finally released Freebox Delta and Freebox One, this time this is a expensive boxe, for the first time you have to pay the player box, because it's basically a Devialet smart speaker. The server is an high end NAS server, with 4G and netflix included. The Freebox One, returns to one only box, like 17 years ago, and is basically a cheap revolution box, more expensive, but with Netflix and USB3 included.
pvr.freebox is an automated kodi pvr client for freebox multiposte, available on Revolution, Mini4k, Delta and One. V5 isn't available anymore. These boxes allow to kodi, full access to IPTV, DVB-T, TV guide and recordings, autodetected via the local freebox network.
Freebox are also allowing TV via UPNP access if you cannot use pvr.freebox
