Subs cannot see a destroyer just on the other side of an oil rig or just past one sub length. Thats ridiculously overpowered. In real world, its exactly the opposite. No ship can easily detect a sub unless surfaced. To make an even bolder statement, there isn't a ship on the sea that can hide from sub detection ability much less survive a full payload being emptied into them, even from a diesel engine one.

if the answer to both is no, then this is almost certainly intended behavior. if the answer to either is no, then it might be intended, especially with a stealth ship. if the answer to both is yes, that's a bit concerning.
also, you should consider the possiblity that they started as something tiny/stealthy e.g. a Visby and upgraded to a destroyer, which caused them to appear on your screen.
I play subs almost exclusively so I may get the ship type confused some.
The answer is yes to both as we were engaged in battle. I was surfaced also. It was medium in length, not the level 8 destroyer. I know the level 8 destroyer is invisible if they move slow though and are not that far, which is rare as they are always under attack.
That orange ship is also impossible, I think its a destroyer. Those things just popup right in front of you at about a sub length. Your typically going after something else when that happens.
All anti-sub ships are crazy overpowered. That low level little heli ship is impossible to see. I have to slow down to nothing and gauge by the torpedo direction but if they are using heli that doesn't work. The typical defense is to fire one rocket or torpedo in different directions to see whether it locks on or if they are closer to see exp chests move towards them. Those things can get right on top of you without going visible.
Most anti-sub ships can be surrounded by other objects like ships or oil rigs and still be invisible at close distance.
