Why isn't there a simply way to deploy to docker / fly.io?

Hi, just getting started in this ecosystem, but I'm not exactly a new developer.

I'm kind of perplexed at how hard it currently is to setup a shopify hydrogen demo store to a docker host like fly.io.

Is this not properly supported because you want people to host on oxygen only? And by 'this' I mean docker...

What am I missing here?

Our initial goal has been to optimize Hydrogen v2 for Oxygen's worker runtime as this is the most common environment for Hydrogen users due to the fact that the cost is included in your Shopify plan.

In v1 we attempted to support multiple environments, but we quickly realized the huge maintenance commitment this required for our team. We are currently evaluating approaches for supporting additional runtimes and Node is on top of the list.

The current workaround for other environments is to leverage a Remix template and port any code over from Hydrogen. I know this is not ideal, but it's all we have atm. 🙏🏼

Do you have any examples of Remix templates with code ported over from Hydrogen to work with Docker?

This really comes across as you're kneecapping other development to focus on pushing Shopify hosting. Not an uncommon thing right now in tech, unfortunately.

I can see why it may feel this way, and I agree we should have an example. I might put one together in just my personal GH namespace. Recognize though we may not have time to continually keep it up to date.

@TomReidNZ I just merged an example of Hydrogen running on Node ExpressJS. This should be fairly easy to adapt to Docker.

Why would you host at fly.io when you can host at shopify, is it because of database location?
This is just something I was wondering about, since I host at shopify and it's free, no cost..

There's a lot of reasons an app could be hosted on another platform, and there's nothing wrong with that. For one, a lot of tools are not yet available in a worker context. Hydrogen is built on Remix, and Remix supports many deployment platforms. But like you said, we do offer Oxygen for free.

I understand there's nothing wrong with that. I already have my MongoDB hosted in a different location, and my API is on Azure. I would love to host them all in one location, but it's prohibitively expensive. I'm already paying $130 each month for Shopify, so why not take advantage of their free hosting service before they start charging for it in the future?
